Almost nobody goes looking for a pension. Their accountant tells them they had a good year.

What Dutch self-employed people say about pensions when nobody is asking them: 484 items across eight subreddits, a long-running technical forum, 548 reviews and a Kifid ruling.

The short version

  1. The whole market chooses in the last three weeks of December. The tax allowance dies on the 31st and an account takes days to open, so the decision gets made in a rush off a shortlist. Searches for jaarruimte berekenen run 3.600 in August and 18.100 in December.
  2. The person who starts the search is usually the bookkeeper. A profit forecast comes in 40k over, and the advice follows. Which is also why it happens in December: nobody knows the year was good until it is nearly over.
  3. What they are afraid of is the next thirty years, not the €210. They have watched a rival end a seventeen-year customer's account at three months' notice, move another member's money without asking, and lose a fee-change case at Kifid for €22.420.
  4. A large part of this market never turns up at all. Their accountant told them the business is the pension: build the goodwill, sell the company, live on that. People who believe it never compare providers, so no pension company ever hears from them.

Not commissioned by BrightPensioen and not affiliated with it. Everything here comes from public sources, quoted as written, with a link at each quote. Bright was chosen because it competes on a promise rather than on a product, which is the kind of position that lives or dies on whether the argument for it travels. There is a great deal of warmth about this company in the corpus as well as criticism, and both are shown.

The moment

December is not a mood. It is a deadline with a wall behind it.

The Dutch tax allowance for pension contributions expires with the calendar year, and the money has to be sitting in an approved account on 31 December. Opening one takes days. So the entire category's demand compresses into a few weeks, and the provider decision gets made under time pressure by people who have often just discovered they had an allowance at all.

On a technical forum, someone has a word for it.

“En toen daalde het stof hier weer neer na alle eindejaarspaniek over het storten in de pensioenpot met alle bijbehorende keuzes. Sparen? Of beter beleggen? En waar dan? NN, Bright, BND, Meesman, De Giro?”

Gathering of Tweakers, 1 January 2025 ↗

And then the dust settled again after all the end-of-year panic about depositing into the pension pot, with all the choices that come with it. Save? Or better to invest? And where? NN, Bright, BND, Meesman, De Giro?

Someone else in the same thread states the behaviour flatly: "gaan de meeste mensen toch pas in december over hun pensioen nadenken." And a fourth voice supplies the mechanic that makes it a scramble rather than a rush: an ordinary deposit account will not do, it has to be a recognised pension account, and "het duurt vaak zeker wel een paar dagen om de pensioenrekening te openen" against a hard 31 December balance date.

Two things make this more than a calendar observation. The first is that the surge belongs to this product and not to investing in general.

Brand searchesDec 2025Aug 2025Ratio

meesman18.10014.8001,2×
degiro74.00074.0001,0×
semmie1.6002.4000,7×

The two brands positioned on third-pillar pension surge. The general investing platforms do not move, and one falls. December is the tax mechanic of this specific product.

The second is that the vocabulary splits in two, and the halves peak in different months.

TermDec 2025Summer lowRatioCPC
jaarruimte berekenen18.1003.6005,0×€1,65

The execution vocabulary spikes four to five times into December and costs under two euros a click. The identity vocabulary barely moves, peaks in spring, and costs four to five times more per click, which is other companies telling you where the accounts actually come from. December is when this audience acts. It is not when they start wondering, and those are two different jobs for two different pages in two different months.

The trigger

The search starts with an accountant and a number, not with a want.

The calendar explains the timing. It does not explain what makes someone look in the first place. Nowhere in 484 items does a self-employed person describe waking up wanting a pension. What they describe is being told something.

“Mijn boekhouder heeft gemeld dat ik het beste een lijfrente- of bankspaarrekening kan openen, gezien wat extra winst dit jaar. […] Ik ben 31 jaar, had een geschatte winst van 55k maar gaat 95k worden”

r/geldzaken, 5 December 2022 ↗

My bookkeeper has told me I would do best to open a lijfrente or bank savings account, given the extra profit this year. I am 31, forecast profit of 55k that is turning into 95k.

A forty thousand euro overshoot against forecast, a bookkeeper who flags it, and a person who then goes looking. It is a good year that starts this, not a bad one, and it closes the loop on the December timing: the bookkeeper only knows the year was good once the year is nearly over.

It also means the person who decides is rarely the person who was persuaded. The bookkeeper names the instrument, and the buyer picks the provider, usually within days, usually alone.

The fear

They are not afraid of the fee. They are afraid of the next thirty years.

This is the most corroborated theme in the research, appearing in four independent places with two different villains. The structure is always the same: a commitment you cannot exit for decades, whose terms somebody else controls.

Adjudicated. A self-employed customer had a competitor's ZZP cost structure applied in April 2020, refused the 2022 change, and took it to Kifid:

“de consument vordert […] dat BND de zzp-pensioenrekening aan hem moet blijven aanbieden tegen het tarief dat voorafgaand aan de tariefwijziging van 17 februari 2022 van toepassing was […] In de ter zitting overgelegde pleitnota heeft de consument de schade begroot op € 22.420,-”

Geschillencommissie Kifid 2023-0641, 18 August 2023, claim partially upheld ↗

The same shape in the competitor's reviews, from someone seventeen years in:

“Na 17 jaar klant te zijn geweest wordt er doodleuk gemeld dat alle aandelen worden verkocht en de rekening wordt opgezegd binnen een termijn van 3 maanden. […] Met name dat je denkt een pensioenvoorziening aan te leggen met een lange [termijn]”

Brand New Day reviewer, Trustpilot 1★, 19 February 2025

And on the technical forum the villain changes. It is not the provider, it is the state, and the conclusion is to stay out of the category entirely:

“De regels rondom pensioen zijn zo frequent aangepast dat ik daar geen geld vastzet. Basically bepaalt de overheid hoeveel je mag inleggen en wanneer je er (boete vrij) bij mag.”

Gathering of Tweakers, 16 December 2023 ↗

The rules around pensions have been changed so often that I do not lock money up there. Basically the government decides how much you may put in and when you can get at it without a penalty.

Four venues, three antagonists, one worry. For a cooperative this is the most answerable fear on the list, because the member is a part-owner rather than a customer, and that is a structural answer nobody else in the category can give.

The objection

What actually loses the sale is a rumour, and it works before anyone makes contact.

On one forum a self-employed buyer narrows the field to three providers and eliminates one in a clause:

“Als ZZP'er wil ik binnenkort starten met pensioenbeleggen […] Voelt toch als een 'grote' keuze. Voorkeur gaat nu uit naar BND of Meesman, Bright valt af ivm dividendlekkage.”

Gathering of Tweakers, 11 October 2023 ↗

As a self-employed person I want to start pension investing soon. It does feel like a big choice. My preference is now BND or Meesman; Bright drops out because of dividend leakage.

On a different forum, someone acts on the same claim and says plainly that he cannot check it: the drawback is "het dividendlek (dit lees ik vooral op deze reddit, ik kan het verder nergens terugvinden)". He read it on Reddit, could not find it anywhere else, and switched anyway.

Underneath it sits a second objection, and this one is aimed at the promise rather than the product. Bright's position is that it does not take a percentage of your pot. In the peer corpus that is the thing used against it.

The attack

“Als ze geen winst nastreven, waarom is dat dan zo ontzettend duur? Mijn for-profit uitvoerder rekent jaarlijks 35 euro aan vaste kosten.”

r/DutchFIRE ↗

If they are not out to make a profit, why is it so extremely expensive? My for-profit provider charges 35 euros a year in fixed costs.

The defence, from a member

“Het is altijd even afwachten als je met een (toen kleinere) partij in zee gaat. Maar ze deden het een beetje anders, met idealen, dat beviel me wel.”

BrightPensioen reviewer, Trustpilot 5★, 16 December 2025

It is always a wait and see when you go with a smaller outfit. But they did it a bit differently, with ideals, and I liked that.

Both are reacting to the same claim. One found it credible and stayed five years. The other treated it as a contradiction and left the conversation. Meanwhile strangers are doing the cost arithmetic in public and disagreeing by three orders of magnitude: €10.000, about €60.000, and €317.368.

The competitor

Their biggest competitor is people who plan to sell their business instead.

One thread produced the most strategically loaded sentence in this research, and it comes second hand, from a professional to his stepson.

“Mijn stiefvader is een succesvol register accountant […] Hij gaf aan dat pensioen opbouwen bij de bank vooral geld kost, terwijl je als ondernemer eigenlijk je pensioen trekt uit het opbouwen van je goodwill na een verkoop.”

r/geldzaken, 21 August 2023 ↗

My stepfather is a successful chartered accountant. He said that building a pension at a bank mostly costs money, whereas as an entrepreneur you really draw your pension from building up goodwill and then selling.

This is a whole alternative theory of what an entrepreneur's retirement is, held by credible professionals and passed to clients. Someone who believes it does not compare providers. They never enter the market at all. Note that it comes from the same profession as the trigger in the section above: the bookkeeper who sends people looking, and the accountant who tells them not to bother, are the same channel pointing in opposite directions.

And this is the part I cannot measure. Across 484 items the belief appears three times, and one of those three is the quote above. The same corpus discusses BV and holding structures nineteen times, so these people are not shy about structural choices. The silence is a selection effect and not an absence: this research is built from people who are already in the conversation, and it cannot contain the people who never joined it. The supply side knows they exist, because insurance intermediaries publish rebuttals addressed to them by name.

Reported as a hole rather than a finding. It is the clearest limit of research done entirely from outside, and the only thing that closes it is the company's own record of why people said no.

The other side

What the corpus says in Bright's favour.

A report that only carried the objections would be a hit piece, and it would also be wrong. Bright's members are unusually warm, and specific about why.

“Erg fijn om een mens te spreken in plaats van een chatbot.”

BrightPensioen reviewer, Trustpilot 5★, 2 February 2026

Really nice to speak to a human being instead of a chatbot.

And in the venue where the criticism is harshest, a member turns up to argue back unprompted.

“Laat ik eens een tegengeluid laten horen over Bright na de overwegend negatieve meningen hieronder ;) Ik spaar er als ondernemer voor mijn pensioen en heb daar een goed gevoel bij. Fijne klantenservice. Je bent en voelt je er lid van een collectief zonder winstoogmerk en ziet je vermogen groeien zonder er naar om te kijken.”

r/DutchFIRE, 18 December 2019 ↗

Let me offer a counter-voice on Bright after the mostly negative opinions below. I save there for my pension as an entrepreneur and I feel good about it. Nice customer service. You are, and feel like, a member of a collective without a profit motive, and you watch your capital grow without having to look at it.

Across 200 retrieved reviews, 179 are five stars and 6 sit at three or below. That is a strong signal and a weak measurement at the same time: Trustpilot is invitation-gated and does not discriminate, so it is used here for themes and not for satisfaction. The theme it carries clearly is that people are buying a human being who answers the phone and a cooperative that does not take a percentage.

What to change

Four moves, and none of them is writing new content.

I wrote four recommendations from the research above, then crawled all 843 pages of brightpensioen.nl to check them, and all four died: Bright had already written the answer to every objection I was about to raise. So these are what survived the crawl. Every one is about putting an existing answer where the moment above actually happens.

01

Put the dividendlekkage answer in front of the people using it to eliminate you

The objection kills the sale before contact, and one of the two people acting on it wrote that he could not find an answer anywhere. He could have. It is on your site, and it is a proper answer.

Today: /faqs/dividendlekkage/ explains the mechanism rather than the outcome: FBI status, custody accounts, no dividend tax withheld inside the box 1 pension account, reclaimable on the box 3 account, and an honest closing concession that even so it cannot be prevented entirely. Nothing in 484 items of audience evidence references it. Gap: not content. Distribution.

Evidence: the elimination ↗ · the switcher who could not find it ↗ · the answer that exists ↗

02

Answer the thirty-year fear where it is felt, not in an accordion

Against the fear in section three, Bright has the strongest answer available to anyone in this category, and it is unusually honest: the fee has never moved, services have been added, it became deductible in 2024, and then a sentence most companies would cut, "We weten niet zeker of we dit kunnen volhouden", with CPI indexation named as the mechanism in the terms.

Today: that is /faqs/gaan-jullie-de-kosten-die-jullie-rekening-brengen-ooit-verhogen/, reached by opening one accordion in a list of 294 FAQs. Read cold, the honest CPI sentence is the half a worried reader keeps, and it currently sits without the cooperative context that would answer it. Gap: partial, and badly placed.

Evidence: Kifid 2023-0641, €22.420 ↗ · the answer ↗

03

Put your own cost figure where the argument is happening

Three strangers are calculating your crossover point in public and landing on €10.000, about €60.000 and €317.368. Bright's own published figure is "rond de €20.000 tot €30.000 aan belegd vermogen", with a worked example showing €2.290 a year saved at €250.000. None of the three had found it.

Today: the figure and the worked examples live across three /kennisbank/ pages. /prijs/ states €210, €50 and "Gratis lid tot € 5.000" and carries none of the argument. Gap: partial, and a placement problem rather than a writing job.

Evidence: the published figure ↗ · the €317.368 calculation ↗ · the pricing page ↗

04

Go and argue with the accountants, because they are both your channel and your competitor

The bookkeeper sends people looking, and the accountant tells them the business is the pension. That is one profession deciding both whether this market exists and who it buys from, and it is the only lever in this report that reaches the people who never arrive.

Today: there is an adviser page, and a stakingslijfrente page that is the only place on 843 crawled pages naming the belief at all. Nothing addresses the goodwill argument directly. Gap: missing, and the hardest of the four, because the audience for it is by definition not reading your site.

Evidence: the accountant's advice ↗ · the bookkeeper's advice ↗ · the one page that names it ↗

What the crawl killed

Every one of these was a recommendation I had written and believed, and every one was checked first against Google's index, which found nothing. Crawling the site found them all. They are published because a report that hides its own corrections is asking you to trust a process you cannot see.

  • "Answer dividendlekkage on the mechanism." They do, on a dedicated page, better than I would have written it.
  • "Defend the €210, do not just state it." They do, with a published crossover point and a worked twenty-year compounding example.
  • "Say what happens if the fee changes." They do, including a concession about inflation most companies would cut.
  • "Own the December deadline." Already owned, with an end-of-year checklist naming the 23:59 iDEAL cutoff and a piece arguing you should start in May.
  • "Build a jaarruimte calculator." Already built: a tool page, a downloadable version for reserveringsruimte, and a knowledge-base cluster.
  • "Make the case against collective funds." The founder wrote it himself in 2021.

No segments are named in this report, and that is deliberate. The bar for naming one is that two consecutive rounds of research turn up no new candidate moment. Five rounds produced something new every time, so the corpus is not finished, and naming segments off an unfinished corpus is how research starts describing keyword clusters as if they were people. What is here instead is the moment, the trigger, the fear and the gaps, all of which stand on their own.

This is what arrives.

The moment, the trigger and the fear in the buyer's own words, with a link at every quote. Then actions, each checked against the live site, with the ones that died published alongside the ones that lived.

That site check is the step most audience research skips, and it is the one that decides whether any of this is worth acting on. Here is the whole of it for brightpensioen.nl, unsoftened.

Check against live site
  • AnsweredAlmost every objection in this report already has a page. The dividendlekkage answer explains custody accounts and FBI status and concedes what it cannot fix. The fee answer admits you are not certain you can hold the price. That is better writing than most of this category manages.
  • BuriedAll of it sits in the FAQ and the knowledge base: 294 FAQ pages and 142 knowledge-base pages out of 843. Your best arguments are filed as reference material for people who have already chosen you.
  • UnreachedAcross 484 items of audience evidence, not one person links to any of it. The man who dropped you over dividendlekkage wrote that he could not find an answer anywhere. It was two clicks away.
  • UnpricedYou publish a crossover point of €20.000 to €30.000. Your pricing page does not mention it. Three strangers are arguing about that number in public and one landed on €317.368.
  • AbsentThe accountants who tell entrepreneurs that a business is a pension are the single largest thing standing between you and this market, and there is nothing on 843 pages addressed to them.
  • SolidDecember is properly covered, and the jaarruimte cluster is genuinely good on the busiest term in the market. Six recommendations died against this site, more than any check in this series has killed.

Verdict. This is not a company with a content problem. It has done the thinking, written it down honestly, and filed it where only existing members will read it. Almost everything above is a moving job, not a writing job.
